The string quintet ‘La Musica Notturna delle Strade di Madrid’ by Luigi Boccherini depicts Madrid’s nocturnal street life, but is also full of peculiar symbolic clues. It inspired Dick van Gasteren to undertake a study in an attempt to discover the meaning of this work. By analogy and example of iconography in the visual arts, Van Gasteren has analyzed the work with startling results. He came across countless references and connections to politics, the visual arts, the theater and… love. He has entrusted his study and findings to paper and this new book will be presented during the Spanish Nights production in February 2023.
The book presentation will be festively decorated with a lecture by Dick van Gasteren, a PowerPoint presentation and a musical accompaniment by a string quintet from Ciconia Consort. And of course with a nice drink afterwards. Let yourself be taken on a captivating journey through the nightly streets of eighteenth-century Madrid. A music lecture for anyone interested in the history of classical music, theater and the visual arts.
