Viennese Romanticism with Ciconia Consort and soprano Lenneke Ruiten
In Wiener Maiblumen, with music from Schubert to Lehár, a fantastic leading role is reserved for star soloist Lenneke Ruiten, who was awarded the prestigious Elly Ameling Ring in February 2023.
When you think of Vienna, you think of Mozart and Johann Strauss or of Schubert, Mahler and Schönberg. In the shadow of these greats are often literary artists who often provided ‘the reason’ and inspiration for a musical work. Wolfgang von Goethe, Theodor Storm and Richard Dehmel were such artists whose poetry led to musical masterpieces.
In a Viennese Konditorei atmosphere, enjoying a piece of Sachertorte, Ciconia focuses on the Viennese literary climate of the fin de siècle. Richard Dehmel’s poem Verklärte Nacht was inimitably beautifully rendered in late Romantic style by Schönberg. Less well known is his poem Maiblumen, set by Zemlinsky. This also applies to Schönberg’s Waltzes for string orchestra, an early work in a Johann Strauss-like style.
Schubert’s string quartet Der Tod und das Mädchen, based on the poem of the same name by Matthias Claudius, was beautifully arranged for string orchestra by Gustav Mahler. In short: a concert not to be missed!

DER BLAUE REITER
6th Feb Hertz Tivoli, Utrecht – 8th Feb Het Concertgebouw, Amsterdam – 11 Feb Nieuwe Kerk, The Hague
Viviane Hagner plays Hartmann
With Der blaue Reiter, Ciconia Consort presents a unique concert program in which expressionism takes center stage. It is a collaboration with the German star violinist Viviane Hagner, who will star in the beautiful Concerto Funèbre by Karl Amadeus Hartmann. Since her debut as a 13-year-old soloist with the Berlin Philharmonic, Viviane Hagner has performed with all the leading orchestras in the world.
Expressionism in Der blaue Reiter
Great artists such as Kandinsky, Munch and Schiele were at the cradle of expressionist art. Personal feelings and experiences were expressed through distortion of reality. This new style had a great influence on classical music. With the projection of some typical expressionist works of art, conductor Dick van Gasteren makes connections between visual art and music.
Ciconia will also perform Shostakovich’s Chamber Symphony during Der blaue Reiter. This work, filled with enormous passion, is considered one of Shostakovich’s most intense works.
Der blaue Reiter also leaves a deep impression on the listener with Alban Berg’s Three Stücke für Streichorchester, Fünf Stücke für Streicher by Paul Hindemith and the moving 3rd string quartet by Viktor Ullmann – a work he wrote in Theresienstadt. Both the special program and the collaboration with Viviane Hagner make this a concert that you will not soon forget.
The program for the new 2023-2024 season has been announced! Pick up the brochure at one of our concerts, or read it digitally here. Ticket sales have already started at most venues, check out the concert agenda for the overview.

ABOUT CICONIA CONSORT
Since its founding in 2012, the Ciconia Consort string orchestra has been giving high-profile performances. The orchestra plays music from all style periods, from baroque to modern. In addition to the great string works, the program also includes often unknown masterpieces and Dutch premieres. The orchestra offers not just a concert, but a real evening or afternoon out, placing concerts in a thematic context.
The Ciconia Consort is conducted by Dick van Gasteren and consists of 20 young musicians who have earned their spurs at (inter)national competitions and concert venues. The orchestra annually presents 20 to 25 concerts throughout the Netherlands with its regular performance venue being the Nieuwe Kerk on the Spui in The Hague.
In December 2018, the debut CD French Music for String Orchestra was released by the Brilliant Classics label. In addition, the orchestra has been heard and seen on radio programs such as; Evening Concert, Spiegelzaal, Vrije Geluiden, Muziekfabriek and Muziekwijzer and on television at Podium Witteman.
